Welcome to Unlocking Japan. If you are reading this, you probably love Japan. Maybe you’ve visited before and fell in love with the food. Maybe you are fascinated by the history of the Samurai. Or maybe you are planning your very first trip to Tokyo.

But Japan can be a mysterious place. We have rules we don’t speak about, menus that are impossible to read, and traditions that go back 1,000 years. It’s beautiful, but sometimes, it feels like there is a wall between the “Visitor” and the “Local.”

I am here to open that door for you.

The Mission 

I created this blog with one simple mission: to be your cultural translator.

I don’t just mean translating Japanese to English. I mean translating the context, the nuance, and the spirit of Japan. When I write about Matcha, I don’t just tell you how it tastes; I tell you about the silence of the tea room. When I explain how to pray at a shrine, I want you to feel the gratitude that we feel.
